5 alternate ways to keep yourself hydrated

About fifty percent of our bodies are made up of water and we need it for pretty much every bodily function. From regulating body temperature to removing waste, lubricating joints and carrying oxygen to cells, water is important for us to feel healthy.

While there’s nothing that’s quite as good as water to stay hydrated, there are plenty of other alternatives if you’d like some change. Here are some water-rich foods that keep the H2O balance right:

1. Watermelon

This probably comes as no surprise, as the name itself contains water in it. Watermelon is a water-rich fruits, with about 92 percent of water content. However, the salt, calcium and magnesium in it makes it ideal for rehydration, according to a 2009 study at the University of Aberdeen Medical School. It is also a good source of potassium, vitamin A and vitamin C.

2. Cucumbers

Cucumbers are cool and most preferred food item during summers. Made up of 96 percent water, cucumber has no saturated fat or cholesterol, and is high in vitamin K, vitamin B6 and iron. You can also team it up with watermelon for an enhanced taste.

3. Lettuce

Iceberg lettuce is usually eaten in salads. However, not many know the water-rich quality that it possesses. With 96 percent water, it is a great way to stay hydrated. They are lacking when it comes to nutrition, therefore it is important to team it up with other nutritious foods such as spinach.

4. Coconut Water

There’s a reason why coconut water is a popular choice for staying hydrated. Unlike sports beverages, coconut water is low in carbohydrates, while still rich in potassium. A study in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise suggested that this all-natural beverage is effective in rehydrating after light exercise. However, for more rigorous sweat sessions, you might need more than just coconut water. It is low in sodium and does not replenish the salt that your body loses.

5. Strawberries

This might come as a surprise but this sweet treat is perfect for staying hydrated. It is made up of 92 percent water (the most of any berry) and is loaded with fiber and vitamin C. Sip it along as a refreshing summer cocktail, or just eat it as it is.
